The fat's are just too old, moving parts like fan or disc drive. If you can find a fat PS2 that has been taken care of I would choose it over a slim for the HDD slot. But I have not have any issue with a slim PS2 besides the tracking coil burning out on the first model (Version 12) slim. I could agree that the laser are crap compared to the original PlayStation 2. I've been using a V14 slim with disc, and a V13 slim with a hard drive (HD loader/OPL) for many years now with no issue. Edit: The slim disc trays are quite annoying at first due to how thin it is.

I have an old phat anyway since i didnt like the slim when it came out, but due to the lack of stores in my area selling extra components I never saw one of those and never bothered with a HDD for it.
