It was arranged by Teodoro Cottrau (1827–1879) and published by the Cottrau firm, as a barcarolla, in Naples in 1849. The beautiful song Santa Lucia is an ode dedicated to the city of Naples and to the Santa Lucia area which faces the Gulf of Naples. The lyrics are the words of a boatman inviting people on his boat, telling them about the beauty of the sea at moonlight and of the city of Naples.
