To me the point with UAD is precisely not to be using native plug ins. In fact UAD are the only plugs I have other than the Cubase ones.Right, but the only reason not to use native plugs was because 1) native cpus weren't powerful enough and B) dsp plugs were usually coded better since they had more power to work with.
Now that cpus have become monsters native developers are really starting to shine. Some great stuff coming out. UA make great stuff but sadly they are going to be tied to the limitations of the card and can't 'grow' as fast as native can since there's constantly newer and better cpus available. UAD3 is another 8 years away I am sure. Only option for UA to compete is to go towards a hybrid dsp/native solution, best of both worlds. Has anyone compared these two emulations of the Trident A-range EQ? I'm currently testing the softube and it's very efficient and sounds very good.
I tried the UAD too, but the demo period is over, I'd have liked to make a real A/B comparison with the same settings.Different serial numbers. UAD sounds brighter and punchier.
For me thats = better. Some people hear the opposite. I dont like the Trident EQ for the music style that i like. Filters are OK, mid range sounds great, but the others.not my thing. The Saturation in the softube is subtle, and not impressive. Im a bit disappointed with the Trident EQ, hear for yourself. Different serial numbers.

The Saturation in the softube is subtle, and not impressive. Im a bit disappointed with the Trident EQ,I'm with you on this. Very nice midrange but no mojo in the bass department and saturation. It can be very useful for guitars but not an all-purpose eq. I'm trying out Softube's Trident A-range and I am in love with its 15k. I liked it so much that I overdid it on a current self-mastering of some mixes - I routinely pushed it over 3db (of boost) and admired what it did to the 'air', but the band wanted a less 'polished' sound, so I have to back off with it. It is just so subtle and smooth - unlike most I had a chance to use.
UAD 1081 can boost high end in a nice and obvious way, but is not at all as fine and subtle as this Trident EQ. Saturation function is subtle and hardly obvious in a way high quality gear should be - it cannot produce real 'lo-fi' saturation - you must use something else for that. I'm doing this right now along with the passive / active eq's. I'm thinking of buying both - sounds really analogue! (though I've never used an A-Range, but worked on an MTA980 for a while) Demo'd the FET too, but the rocket did it for me just as well so I'll stick with that.
I've worked on the a-range, and i'm pretty blown away. I was always amazed by the tone shaping of that eq, and softube really nailed it.
It's instant vibe, and it's nice to see some no nonsense eq's out there now. It's pretty much good on anything as a part of a chain. I find a combo of a-range plus sonnox, or massenburg for cleanup has been brilliant.
